Acoustic booths for your office

An open office works, until someone has to make a call. Hushoffice builds free-standing acoustic booths you install without any building work: from a phone booth of less than one square metre to a meeting unit for four people.

Lighting and ventilation start as soon as you step in, the acoustics are independently tested to the international standard, and on castors a unit moves with you when your office changes. Every conversation gets its own place, without the rest of the floor listening in.

Standards and decibels

Comfort rather than absolute silence

Complete silence sounds appealing, but it feels unnatural and becomes uncomfortable over time. A good pod therefore never shuts you off entirely from your surroundings, and that is deliberate: you need to hear a fire alarm and the ventilation needs air.

What matters is making speech unintelligible. It is not background noise that breaks your concentration, but a conversation you can half follow.

How it works in practice

70 dBa normal voice inside the pod
−30 dBwhat the pod holds back
±40 dBwhat remains outside
50 dBbackground noise in the office

The conversation drops below the background noise. You notice someone is talking, but you can no longer make out a word.

The standard: ISO 23351-1:2020

The first international standard specifically for acoustic pods. It measures in a lab how much speech the complete pod holds back, under identical conditions for every brand, and assigns a class. Click a class for more detail.

A higher class is not always necessary. A class B pod is generally lighter and easier to move, and more than sufficient in many offices.

Speech reduction per class

A+ ≥ 33 dB
A 30–33 dB
B 25–30 dB
C 20–25 dB
D < 20 dB

Comparing with other brands? Always ask for the full test report from an independent body, not just a class or a single dB value. We are happy to send you the reports per model on request.

Pod or fixed meeting room?

For large meetings, training sessions or a boardroom, a fixed room remains the right choice. For daily meetings, video calls and one-to-one conversations, a pod is often the smarter option.

Criterion Acoustic pod Fixed meeting room
Ready to use within one working day weeks to months
Building work none, just a power socket contractor, electrician, finishing
Ventilation, lighting, acoustics included as standard to be arranged separately
When you move comes with you stays behind
In a rented building no changes to the building landlord's permission required

So look beyond the purchase price to the total cost: building work, installations, project management and disruption during the works all count too.

Frequently asked questions

All about acoustic booths

An acoustic booth is a free-standing, sound-absorbing space you place in an open office without any building work. It absorbs speech so that a conversation inside does not disturb anyone outside, and the other way round. The booths are tested under ISO 23351-1:2020, which measures how much speech level they hold back.

That depends on the number of people and the use. For short phone calls, a booth for one person of less than one square metre is enough. For focused work you choose a unit with a full desk. For meetings of up to four people you take a meeting booth with benches and a table top, and for video meetings a unit with extra adjustable lighting.

A booth holds back a considerable part of speech, but never closes you off entirely from your surroundings. That is deliberate, because you have to be able to hear an alarm. The aim is for intelligible speech to fall away, because it is precisely that intelligibility which breaks your concentration. We are happy to provide the measured values per model in the technical sheet.

ISO 23351-1:2020 is the international standard for acoustic booths. It measures how much speech level a booth holds back and assigns a class from A+ to D. Class A and above stands for excellent speech privacy. A booth in class B is usually lighter and easier to move.

No. The booth stands free in the room and is installed without building work. All you need is a socket. No planning permission is required and there is no building site involved.

Yes. Every unit has built-in castors and levelling feet, plus a removable front panel so a pallet truck fits underneath. When you reorganise or move office, the booth comes along without being dismantled.

Yes. Every Hushoffice unit has built-in ventilation and lighting that switch on automatically through a motion sensor. Two fans replace the air completely in ninety seconds. On most models you adjust the intensity yourself with rotary controls.

Noise can have a major impact on productivity. Intelligible conversations in particular lead to loss of concentration, more mistakes and a higher mental load. Various studies show that employees work less efficiently and are distracted more often in noisy office environments. By improving the acoustics with, for example, acoustic booths, wall panels and a smart layout, you create a work environment in which people can focus better.

In an open office, it is above all the conversations of colleagues that are a major source of distraction. Our brain is naturally sensitive to speech, so even quiet conversations draw attention without us noticing. Reverberation, phone calls and a lack of quiet workspaces also make sustained focused work harder. With the right acoustic solutions and enough quiet spots, you create more calm on the work floor.

That depends on the use. A phone booth is ideal for calls, video meetings and short online meetings with one person. A meeting booth suits discussions with colleagues, brainstorming sessions or confidential conversations with several people. By working out in advance how the space will be used, you choose a booth that best matches your organisation's needs.

A noisy work environment can lead to more stress, mental fatigue and concentration problems. In the long run this can affect job satisfaction, engagement and even absenteeism. A quiet work environment with good acoustics contributes to more comfort, fewer distractions and a pleasant working experience for employees.

The best solution depends on the cause of the problem. Where there is a lot of reverberation, sound-absorbing materials such as wall panels or ceiling islands help. Where phone calls and discussions are the main distraction, acoustic booths usually deliver the most calm. In practice, the best acoustics are generally achieved by combining several solutions.

An office often has an acoustic problem when employees are regularly distracted by conversations, struggle to concentrate or find spaces noisy. A lot of reverberation, poor speech intelligibility during meetings and a shortage of quiet workspaces are clear signals too. An acoustic analysis helps to establish the cause and determine the most effective solutions.
